Perforations

Perforations are made on coils or sheets before folding. They contribute to a panel’s acoustic and aesthetic properties.
Perforations can vary in size, shape, arrangement and spacing.
Together, these elements determine the percentage of open area compared with an unperforated sheet.

The coding of the type of perforation works as follows :

A letter designating the shape followed by a number for its dimensions

R > Trou rond

C > trou carré

LR > trou oblong

LC > trou rectangulaire

M > en quinconce à 90°

U > aligné disposé en carré

T > en quinconce à 60 °

Z > alterné (Z1 x Z2)

The percentage of empty space follows or precedes these different terms
Example : R1.5 M5.65 11%

  • It is necessary to specify the orientation of certain shapes or layouts by means of a plan. Examples: diamond shapes
    the orientation of holes in oblong shapes (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, aligned, crossed, herringbone…).
  • Each combination of this alpha-numeric coding corresponds to a formula for calculating the open area percentage.
  • The choice of points between which the center-to-center distance is measured can vary from one supplier to another, so you have to rely on the percentage of empty space.
  • When determining sheet dimensions and bending dimensions, it’s important to take into account the material stretch induced by this operation. Stretch is a function of thickness.

Calculating the weight of an unperforated sheet : (Dimensions in mm)

Length x width x thickness x density = weight (kg)

Exemple de densités arrondies (kg/dm3) :
Acier > 8 Inox > 8 Aluminium > 2.7

Calculating the weight of a perforated sheet as a whole :

Weight of unperforated sheet x (1 – coefficient) = weight (kg)

(The coefficient corresponds to the percentage of empty space divided by 100, e.g. 11% > 0.11)

Remarks :

Perforations do not necessarily cover the entire sheet, which affects the calculation.

Beyond these basic characteristics, the following parameters can vary production constraints and consequently cost :

  • Metal (galvanized steel, electro-galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum)
  • Whether the material is pre-painted or post-painted
  • The addition of lubricant or plastic film to preserve the perforating tool
  • Absence of surface damage (scratches, burrs)
  • Flatness requirements
  • The dimensions of the roll of material, in particular its width
  • Accuracy of squareness (allowable margin)

ECHAME works with pre-painted sheet metal from forges, or galvanized steel sheets that receive a post-painting treatment directly in the factory.
ECHAME is equipped with its own polyester powder coating line, enabling it to produce all colors according to the RAL color chart on a base of 30% gloss.
On our standard whites, light reflection indices have been tested to EN410.
Light reflection depends not only on the shade, but also on the perforation rate.
